Greetings,

How many of you are employed where your job is to find a new job, and you work on that task from 8-5 everyday? I'm guessing not many of you raised your hands. For many, this might be your first foray into the job search world, whether by unfortunate events or simply looking to take your career to that next level.

I talk to folks all the time who have been in the workforce for 5-10-15 years, yet have never updated their resumes nor experienced a job interview. Suddenly finding yourself in search of a new job can seem daunting. First of all, don't panic. Second of all, don't assume things (I'll get to this in a moment). You need to go about a job search with the same motivation, tenacity, and organization that you use in your everyday job. Also, though your cash flow may be a little tight at the moment, draft a job search budget and be prepared to spend some money. Very few things in life are free. The next president of the United States will not have gotten the job by spending only a few dollars along the way.

Get your resume in order. If you're not a very articulate or eloquent writer, then pay somebody to do it for you. Make sure your resume is results-oriented. Don't just rattle off what you did on a daily basis. Tell me how your efforts impacted the bottom line. Did you increase sales by XX percentage? Did you decrease PPC costs by a certain amount? How much did sales increase by your SEO efforts or email campaigns? Also, and this is a big pet peeve of mine, don't use an "Objective" section on your resume! That's the biggest waste of space I can think of. Microsoft Word needs to remove it from their resume templates. "I'm seeking a job to utilize my skills with an employer who values my contribution." No kidding? Use an eye-catching "Summary" of your background and accomplishments instead.

Post your resume online. Don't do this in a haphazard fashion. Be targeted. Think about where you want to advertise your skills. Out of 3,900 HR professionals and recruiters, 89% said they have more success finding people on niche boards. If you just post your resume to a big three board like Monster, then you're significantly shorting yourself. Don't assume you can post it there and people will find you. While it's free for you to post, it costs a lot of money for employers or recruiters to access that database. Many of the employers who are registered at our own site, eMarketingSilo, don't subscribe to those databases and will never see your resume. Worried about posting your information online? Newsflash.. you're already out there. Google yourself. If you want to post anonymously, there are some places that parse your contact information.... like eMarketingSilo! Your information will only be released if you respond favorably to an employer inquiry. Lastly, break out that wallet and pay for a featured upgrade. At most sites, this costs anywhere from $10-$25. It's worth it. Your entry will be highlighted and show up before the general resume group.

Distribute your resume. There are services who will put your resume on the desk of recruiters and hiring managers at specific companies (Guaranteed opens/views). ResumeSpider is a service I highly recommend! See our Candidate Resource page for details.

Create a shortlist of professional contacts. Whether you use software on your own PC, LinkedIn, or a Rolodex to manage your contacts, you'll need to actively reach out to these folks and give them a heads-up that you're in the market for a new job.

Follow up, follow up, follow up. Don't apply and forget about it. Ask the employer about the hiring process and timeline. Don't assume no word means not interested. Maybe your resume got lost, or the deal with their #1 candidate fell through and they want to review more interested applicants.

Research and target ideal employers. Not all job openings are posted on 3rd party job boards. Furthermore, not all job openings are posted on corporate websites (if they even have one). A direct call or email to a company may unveil a hidden gem of an opportunity.

Be confident, yet humble. You have years of success doing what you do. A 2-page piece of paper isn't going to accurately explain all that experience. You have to take things further, either verbally or with additional written questions from a recruiter or employer. Don't be cocky and expect someone to hire you soley based on your resume. You have to work to get the job. What sets you apart from the half dozen other people we're looking at who have the same resume as you?
