a significant presence on the global stage, we are widely known for our world-leading research and illustrious alumni, with an unusually high number leading major international museums,
commercial galleries, auction houses and art fairs drawn from just 9,000 alumni. Having recently secured a £30 million gift – the largest in the institutions history – The Courtauld is
redeveloping its new state of the art campus at Somerset House ahead of its 100th Anniversary in 2032.
The vision and foresight of philanthropists throughout the Courtauld’s history have played a pivotal part in shaping the Courtauld into the centre of excellence for visual arts research and
education that it is today. This is highlighted by the breadth and depth of the Courtauld’s alumni community, many of whom are supporters, advocates and volunteers for our mission.
We are recruiting for a dedicated Senior Alumni Engagement Manager who will drive forward our Alumni Engagement programme as a key member of the Advancement department.
Reporting to the Deputy Director of Advancement, the Senior Alumni Engagement Manager will be responsible for implementing The Courtauld Institute of Art’s strategy to develop
excellent alumni engagement programmes including events, communications and appeals that build and strengthen relationships between the organisation and its community of
graduates, and that support fundraising, student recruitment and profile raising.
The ideal candidate should have experience in alumni relations or alumni engagement, preferably within Higher Education, with an interest in the arts and culture sector. They
should have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to write compelling and well-structured communications, plan and organise events, and mobilise
volunteers. The candidate should be adaptable, well-organised, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. They should also be able to work independently as
well as part of a team.
The range of responsibilities and duties of this role will include the following, although priorities may change in line with the development of the role and other duties may be allocated from
time to time.
Main Responsibilities
1. In consultation with the Marit Rausing Director, the Director of Development and the Deputy Director of Advancement, implement the alumni engagement strategy.
2. As the central point of contact for all alumni information and enquires, be accountable for ensuring that alumni records are fully up to date and that alumni reports, benchmarking activity, statistics and surveys are delivered when required, to help inform wider organisational strategy.
3. Ensure there is effective information sharing with key stakeholders including internal colleagues relating to alumni events, successes, activities and programmes.
4. Working under the direction of the Deputy Director of Advancement, manage all alumni activity for individual giving appeals, legacy fundraising. promote individual giving and
major giving opportunities to alumni and identify potential alumni donor prospects and advocates to support with wider Advancement objectives, asking for their support where appropriate.
5. Work closely with the wider Advancement Department to ensure that alumni advocates are appropriately stewarded, and that leading advocates are identified as required for fundraising events, membership programme content and profile raising activity.
6. Shape and implement the alumni programme of communication and event activity including:
a. Delivering all alumni digital and printed communications, including social media and website updates.
b. Preparing and delivering Courtauld Alumni Advisory Board Meetings (the alumni committee)
c. Developing the regional alumni volunteers programme, ensuring all representatives receive regular communications, engagement and support to be effective advocates of the Courtauld
d. Managing and implementing a programme of national and international alumni events with the support of the Events team and regional alumni volunteers
e. Support programmes for student recruitment and careers activity, working with the Marketing and Careers teams, including identifying key alumni advocates to provide content for these programmes
f. Managing the alumni benefits programme, including discounts and special offers
7.Supporting with the co-ordination, content planning and editing of the annual Courtauld News publication including administering production, and distribution.
8.Keeping abreast of sector trends across advancement in higher education, and liaising with counterparts at peer institutions to ensure that the Courtauld’s alumni engagement programme follows best practice.
9.To respect confidentiality and carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the post in a professional manner and with due regard to the importance of the site and in
compliance with all of its policies, but especially Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety.
10. To undertake any other duties and responsibilities when requested, which are commensurate with this role.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Degree or equivalent, with a preference for a degree within art history or the visual arts
Experience:
- Previous experience building and developing effective relationships with alumni as both advocates and donor
- Experience working with effective digital marketing and communication tools including web-editing, social media communications and bulk email marketing
- Knowledge and experience of writing, producing and editing printed communications including leaflets and publications
- Knowledge and experience of organising and managing a range of events, including developing event content
- Knowledge and experience of working with influential individuals (for example business leaders, VIPs and donors)
- Demonstrable project management knowledge and experience
- Demonstrable knowledge and affinity with the Visual Arts
- Experience of working with volunteers
Skills
- Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work effectively on own initiative, under pressure, and to tight deadlines
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with people at all levels including the Courtauld’s leadership team, senior volunteers, and key alumni
- Demonstrable ability to think and plan strategically and creatively
- Excellent IT skills, with the ability to use a variety of software packages including all Microsoft Office applications and a relational database. Ideally Raiser’s Edge (training will be given if required)
- An excellent team player with the ability to work effectively with colleagues in the Advancement Department and across the Courtauld
- Experienced with stakeholder engagement, both internal and external.
- Flexible in approach and able to work outside of normal office hours including evenings and weekends as required
- A genuine interest in the arts and higher education
- A thorough understanding of the Courtauld and its goals in teaching, research and curating
