The Development Manager position at The Fur-Bearers is a contract position that will work as part of a small and talented team. Renewal of this position is based on performance and budgetary considerations. The ideal candidate is a self-starter whose primary responsibility is creating and executing a long-term fundraising plan that incorporates existing and novel acquisition strategies, donor stewardship, data-driven analysis, and new funding opportunities to support our mission.

Job Title: Development Manager
Reports to: Executive Director
Term: 12-month Contract (June 1, 2024 to May 30, 2025) with an opportunity for renewal/ full-time position. 
Job Location: This is a work-from-home position, in Canada, no fixed office location.
Compensation: $75K – $80K based on experience. Flexible schedule.

Requirements

The Development Manager position at The Fur-Bearers is a contract position that will work as part of a small and talented team. Renewal of this position is based on performance and budgetary considerations. The ideal candidate is a self-starter whose primary responsibility is creating and executing a long-term fundraising plan that incorporates existing and novel acquisition strategies, donor stewardship, data-driven analysis, and new funding opportunities to support our mission. During the course of this term, success will be measured by the ability to achieve/exceed mutually agreed upon quarterly fundraising goals.

Key Responsibilities

To create a fundraising plan that includes:

Acquisition of New Donors

  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Communications and Social Media & Communications Coordinator to develop and execute strategic plans aimed at acquiring new donors. This will include digital marketing across multiple channels.
  • Partner with the Director of Communications to curate and maintain development-related content and tools across online and print platforms, ensuring consistency and effectiveness in messaging and branding.
  • Work alongside the Director of Communications and Executive Director to establish and uphold a cohesive fundraising strategy among staff, board members, and volunteers regarding donor acquisition and fundraising initiatives at The Fur-Bearers. This includes providing training and resources to ensure all stakeholders are well-equipped to communicate the organization’s mission and encourage giving effectively.

Donor Stewardship

  • Cultivate strong relationships with existing donors to ensure ongoing support and engagement.
  • Develop and implement a donor stewardship program that will include existing systems, donor journey automation, LYBUNT and SYBUNT management, and acquisition strategies.
  • Develop personalized stewardship plans for major donors, including regular communication, recognition, and involvement opportunities.
  • Support the activities that arise from individualized donor cultivation and stewardship plans, including follow-up calls, emails and mailings with an emphasis on reactivation and retention efforts.

New Sources of Funding

  • Conduct prospect research to identify new funding opportunities, including grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual donors.
  • Create opportunities for peer-to-peer fundraising,events, and in-kind giving.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends and best practices in fundraising to optimize fundraising efforts.
  • Utilize tools of our CMS to maximize its use for development.
  • Collaboration, reporting and general administration:
  • Maintain accurate donor records and databases to track donor interactions and fundraising progress.
  • Prepare regular reports on fundraising activities, donor acquisition, and revenue projections for organizational leadership.
  • Ensure development is consistent with The Fur-Bearers’ and Canada Revenue Agency requirements.
  • Ensure proper electronic and hard copy filing of proposals, donor gift agreements, acknowledgments, stewardship letters and reports and correspondence.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a related field – college minimum, university preferred – or a combination of education, comparable skills and experience.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of professional experience working in a fundraising environment, preferably for a Canadian non-profit or charity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in use of computer software including Microsoft’s suite of tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email and scheduling systems, and other internet applications.
  • Previous experience working with one or a variety of fundraising databases is an asset (preferably Keela). 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and very strong person-to-person relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple and changing demands.
  • Proven ability to exercise empathy, listening skills, diplomacy and good judgment.
  • Exemplary attention to detail with excellent planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Qualified to work full time in Canada.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.  
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the mission and values of The Fur-Bearers.
  • Demonstrated love for wildlife, animals and animal welfare.

Shortlisted candidates will move forward to a second interview (end of May/June)
