Position Overview

The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas is searching for a full-time, tenure-track/tenured professor at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Appointment at a particular level will be based on applicant's qualification and record.  The position is expected to begin August 2023.

Applicants that demonstrate teaching, research, or creativity expertise in one or more of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: media writing, content creation, sports media, sports marketing, visual communication, and media management.

The School has three areas of concentration:  Digital Marketing Communication, Advertising &Public Relations; Media Arts & Production; and Multimedia Journalism. In Fall 2023, the School plans to launch a new concentration in Sports Media and Culture. Applicants should address their teaching expertise and research interest in one or more of these areas of concentration.

 Job Description

40% Teaching:
Teach and develop courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs (in-person and online), based upon needs of the School.

40% Research:
Demonstrate sustained productivity through peer-reviewed publications, sponsored projects/grants, papers and presentations for national and international academic and professional audiences, or other forms of research, whether creative- or community-based projects recognized at the national or international level.

20% Service:
Service responsibilities include involvement in the regular academic activities of the School, including committee assignments and major School functions, serving on and chairing graduate committees, as well as participation in professional service in academic, professional and/or media organizations.
 Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of research/creative work and teaching in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity included in CV and (3) information provided from three professional references.

For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure-track):
  • A Ph.D. in mass communication or a related field. If ABD, the Ph.D. must be achieved within six months of employment start date.
  • Demonstrated (or high potential for) teaching excellence in a university setting including the ability to develop and teach in-person and online courses.
  • Demonstrated (or high potential for) research and/or creative success as shown through publications, portfolio, awards, research grants, or working papers.

For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor (tenured):
  • A Ph.D. in mass communication or a related field.
  • Proven record of teaching excellence in a university setting including the ability to develop and teach in-person and online courses.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research and/or sustained creative works as shown through publications, portfolio, awards, research grants, or working papers that have either enabled the candidate to be successfully promoted to Associate Professor at a research-oriented university of a similar or higher research profile as the University of Kansas or meet the expectations in professional experience for qualifications.
  • Professional experience, research/teaching partnerships or documented industry engagement in journalism or other relevant field to the position.
